As part of the Stevens View Partnership (SVP), View Marketing was appointed in November 2008 by a private consortium with public support comprising the Dumfries and Galloway Area Tourism Partnership (ATP), the Association of Dumfries and Galloway Accommodation Providers (ADGAP) and Dumfries and Galloway Council. The project was to conduct a study into the feasibility and merits of establishing a Destination Development Organisation (DDO) for the region.
Involving extensive research into the region and its tourism products, the study also drew upon national and international best practice in destination development and a comprehensive industry-wide consultation. Almost 20 per cent of the tourism industry participated via a series of workshops and discussion groups, online questionnaires, a web forum as well as through the ATP, ADGAP and the Chamber of Commerce.
Presenting their recommendations at a public conference in May 2009, the SVP proposed the formation of a DDO as a not-for-profit company with community intent, to be led by a Chair and a board of directors, and replacing the existing ATP. The board would be predominantly private sector but with public representation and would work closely with business associations including the Chamber of Commerce and key sectors such as mountain biking, wildlife and walking groups.
The SVP continues to support the steering group to establish this new organisation.
"Terry and Yvonne have helped us to see the development of tourism in Dumfries and Galloway in the wider Scottish and international context. It has been particularly refreshing to receive such an upbeat assessment of the potential of our region from an external expert – too often I feel we have been told not to get above ourselves. Through their enthusiasm and expertise they have instilled self-belief and caught the attention and commitment of businesses."
Dr Joan Mitchell, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Destination Development Organisation Shadow Board
